(Macau).- The city’s casino industry has seen a 9 per cent increase in average daily gross gaming revenue to MOP86 million (US$10.58 million) during the August 15-21 week compared with the previous week, according to a note by Stanford C. Bernstein.

Figures collected by the brokerage from channel checks show that gaming revenue this month until August 21 stood at around MOP1.4 billion (US$172 million), 53 per cent lower than in the same period of August 2021 and still only 9 per cent of pre-COVID August 2019.
“The recovery is still slow as constrained by various travel restrictions in China, and players remaining cautious on travel (in fear of government suddenly imposing lockdown order like in Sanya of Hainan province)”, the note issued by analysts Vitaly Umansky, Louis Li and Shirley Yang indicates.
While noting that the city has seen zero COVID-19 cases since August 30 and an improvement in visitation figures so far in August, the pace of gross gaming revenue in August and September “is still uncertain and largely dependent on whether China can quickly contain the regional COVID outbreaks.”
The analysts also refer to the relaxed in-bound arrangement for foreigners traveling to the SAR via mainland China, considering it “a positive but baby step towards reopening international travel.”
Meanwhile, Macau received more than 17,000 visitors on Saturday (August 20) , the highest number since mainland China lifted mandatory quarantine for people coming from the SAR, the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) announced.
